What's on Antenna - The PBS Entertainment

It’s time to talk about another channel and all it offers in this week’s newsletter! Let’s talk about PBS and the variety of the entertaining programs it offers on your antenna TV free of any additional charges or aggravating paywalls.

PBS is known for their masterful work in the documentary category. On PBS you can watch documentaries like The Barefoot Artist, focusing on the life and work of Lily Yeh, a Chinese-born artist known for her community-based art initiatives. The documentary is directed by Daniel Traub and Glenn Holsten, and the film weaves together two main narratives: Lily Yeh's artistic journey and her personal quest to heal familial wounds. A beautiful journey for audiences to go on, The Barefoot Artist is just one example of the creative, immersive, and intellectually stimulating documentaries PBS offers. Vanishing Chinatown: The World of the May’s Photo Studio is another PBS documentary available on your antenna TV free of any additional charges. Preserving the history of San Francisco's Chinatown through a remarkable collection of photographs, this documentary zooms in on the work of The May's Photo Studio, owned by Leo and Isabella May Chan Lee, which captured the lives of Chinese immigrants in the early to mid-1900s.

Aside from documentaries, there are a handful of educational television programs on PBS that audiences of all ages can enjoy. Antiques Roadshow combines elements of adventure, history, nostalgia and treasure hunting. It also offers a spotlight for experts from leading auction houses and independent dealers to provide appraisals of antiques and collectibles that are brought in by the public.

If you’re looking for less educational material and more dramas that you can binge, don’t fret, PBS has those as well. Call the Midwife is available on your antenna TV and is a critically acclaimed British drama series that provides intimate and poignant look at the lives of midwives working in London's East End during the late 1950s and 1960s following the real-life recounts of midwife Jennifer Worth. Stories From the Stage is another show on PBS that aims to entertain. Stories From the Stage is a storytelling series that features ordinary people sharing their own extraordinary experiences. The show features an incredibly unique format and aims to bring people from diverse backgrounds together through the medium of storytelling.

And no piece about PBS would be complete without talking about the PBS crown jewel, Masterpiece Theater. The series continues to be a staple of PBS programming, showcasing acclaimed dramas and adaptations. Upcoming episodes include "Howards End" and "Wolf Hall," with specific air dates scheduled for November 24 and December 1, respectively. We hope you recorded the episodes on November 24. This is one series that you can set to “record series - do not duplicate”, with confidence, on your DVR.

Here are other notable shows currently airing on PBS:

  • Sesame Street: An iconic children's program that has been educating and entertaining young audiences since 1969.
  • All Creatures Great and Small: A heartwarming series about a veterinarian in 1930s Yorkshire, based on the books by James Herriot.
  • Grantchester: A mystery series that combines elements of detective fiction with the personal lives of its characters, set in a quaint English village.
  • Finding Your Roots: Hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr., this genealogy show explores the family histories of celebrities.
